The Review

Sonic Forces features Sonic the Hedgehog as the main playable characters but you can choose others as well. This game is all about how fast you can reach the finishing line compared to your opponents. It’s not really a race in essence. Sonic Forces is more of an obstacle avoiding auto-runner game with a similar format as Temple Run or Subway Surfers.

Nonetheless, there’s a lot of fun in trying to avoid all obstacles in your path, collecting power-ups along the way and using them at the right time to beat your opponent. The controls of this game are pretty simple and straight forward. All you need to do to control your character is direct him right, left or make him jump over obstacles. This is quite similar to Subway Surfers if you think about it. Along the way, players get to collect the classic Sonic rings and gather powerful boosters. These boosters include a speed boost which if used in the right time can propel you quite a ahead of your enemy; a shield; a projectile which fires directly at your opponent or a wall/obstacle; and a trap. Players can also attack their opponents with mines, lightning, tornadoes, fireballs and much more. It’s also important to remember that each character will have its own set of power-ups and special abilities. Players who have upgraded their characters using the Sonic rings will have more power-ups and faster characters than rookies.

When you first download and run the app, the game runs you through a quick tutorial just so you can get into the mood of the game. Once you’re ready, you’re instantly thrown into a race against four other players and the objective is to beat them to the finishing line.

Sonic Forces features a wondrous collection of levels and courses to race in. Some of these might be a nostalgic experience for fans of the SEGA game while other landscapes are new and never before seen in a Sonic the Hedgehog game. All of the levels have their own unique racing tracks and courses. Higher levels get more difficult with more obstacle and tricky courses that you need to race in. All of this makes Sonic Rush a very entertaining game with little or no element of repetition or monotony.

Every time you win a race, you’re awarded with a trophy as well that you can keep as evidence of your achievements in the game and show it off on the leaderboard charts. You also get to unlock new tracks and characters the more levels you succeed. Sonic Forces features some pretty cool and powerful characters that you can unlock but you’ll need to work hard to get them. These rare characters include Omega and Vector.

Players of Sonic Forces have raised some concerns about the game though. For starters, many players feel that they get stuck in the game and the only way out is to make some hefty in-app purchases. There have also been recommendations to have an option of adding friends in the game instead of just racing against strangers.
